Adelaide remain hopeful defender Brodie Smith will play in an AFL elimination final despite missing training on Wednesday because of an ankle injury.

The All Australian backman is likely to face a last-gasp fitness test on game day to prove his fitness for Saturday night's MCG final against the Western Bulldogs.

"He did a bit of stuff inside today but he's tracking really well," Adelaide onballer Rory Sloane told reporters after training.

"I reckon he's looking pretty good at the moment.

"We will give him every chance ... he has got until Saturday morning to prove his fitness, he's an important player for us so we definitely want him out there."

Smith, who was substituted during Adelaide's loss to Geelong last Saturday, is Adelaide's sole injury concern heading into a sudden-death final against the Bulldogs.

"The season starts again now," Sloane said.

"We won't be happy until we get the job done in this first game and hopefully keep moving on from there.

"But this first final is absolutely huge for us. We are not here to make up the numbers at all, just like every team."

The Crows have been dealt a kind card by the AFL scheduling the elimination final at the MCG rather than the Dogs' home ground, Etihad Stadium.

But Sloane said the Bulldogs would present a stern test wherever the game was played.

"The way they move the ball is very quick and they're going to take us on so no matter where we played them, it was always going to be a challenge," he said.
