Australian Defence Force personnel have been farewelled by Fijians as they prepare to go home after almost two months providing Cyclone Winston relief.

Around 200 defence members will leave over the next week after repairing buildings, delivering food and restoring power and water in the aftermath of the storm.

At its peak, Operation FIJI ASSIST involved around 1000 defence force personnel.

"We have made a lot of friendships that will endure well into the future," Task Force commander Lieutenant Colonel Scott Hill said after a formal ceremony involving Fijian dignitaries and troops.

The mission will officially end when the state of emergency concludes on April 19.
