Adoption numbers in Australia are at a 50-year low.
There were 317 adoptions finalised in Australia in 2013-14, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare's latest report.
This represents a nine per cent decline on the previous year and the smallest number of children adopted since national records began in 1968-69.
Just more than 200 children adopted were born in Australia, while 114 came from overseas.
Taiwan was the most common origin country for overseas adoptions followed by the Philippines and South Korea.
Key adoption statistics 2013-14
- 317 adoptions finalised in Australia in 2013-14, compared with 1294 in 1989-90.
- 203 were of children from Australia.
- 89 children were adopted by carers or foster parents.
- 114 overseas adoptions.
- 89 per cent of overseas adoptions were Asian children.
- Taiwan was the most common origin country with 41 adoptions, followed by the Philippines 18 and South Korea 13.
- Median processing time for overseas adoptions was five years.
