Adviser not consulted on NAPLAN testing

A Senate committee has heard the key agency which oversees major computer projects was not asked for advice on the proposed NAPLAN online tests.

The federal agency which oversees the management of IT projects says it has not been consulted on the rollout of online trials of literacy and numeracy tests.

Students in 1-in-10 schools in the ACT, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia were supposed to do their NAPLAN tests in May online.

But the states and territories have pulled out, citing concerns about technological glitches and that students wouldn't be properly tested.

The move away from pen and paper tests was expected to allow the body in charge of the tests, ACARA, mark them quicker, meaning teachers get better information sooner about how their students are doing.

Digital Transformation Agency chief of staff Nerida O'Loughlin told a Senate committee on Tuesday the NAPLAN project had been "well under way for many years", but the DTA had not been involved in it or consulted.

"Ultimate responsiblity for IT projects reside with the departments running those projects," she said.

"It's up to the departments if (they consider) there's an opportunity for our organisation to play a role."
