AEC confident voter turnout was good

The Australian Electoral Commission expects the overall turnout in the re-run WA senate election to be more than 85 per cent.

Voters in the regional seat of Durack have so far proved apathetic in the re-run West Australian Senate election, with a turnout of less than 62 per cent.

But with 1.4 million people registered to vote in WA, the overall turnout is still estimated to reach more than 85 per cent based on the number of enrolments, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) says.

But with a little more than one million votes counted so far, figures are so far showing a total voter turn out of 68.75 per cent.

Durack had a voter turnout of just 61.94 per cent, compared to Forrest which had the largest turnout of 76.14 per cent.

David Black, history and politics professors at Curtin University, said an 85 per cent turnout would be a "spectacularly strong" result, given the turnout at general elections was just shy of 93 per cent.

"There was a suggestion it could drop down to the low 70s, but that didn't happen," he told AAP.

"Considering that it was a one-off election, I thought the turnout was good.

"A lot of people are vote-weary, having voted at state and federal elections, but it looks as if they've made the effort."

With 91.8 per cent of polling places having so far counted first preferences, the results were on track for a 5.48 swing against the Liberals and a 4.84 swing against Labor.

Palmer United Party (PUP) was on course for a 7.49 swing in its favour while there was a 6.38 per cent towards the Australian Greens.
