New AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan wants two smaller clubs involved if the league goes ahead with Good Friday football.
Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has called for a blockbuster fixture, perhaps involving a big club against a smaller-drawing team.
But McLachlan's preference is to try to build the fixture if the league breaks with long-standing tradition and plays on Good Friday.
North Melbourne are keen for a game against Carlton and use it to help raise funds for the annual Good Friday Appeal.
"My preference is to have two smaller clubs in that slot and build something," McLachlan told TripleM on Saturday.
"The trouble is, I actually don't think it matters whether they're good clubs or smaller clubs."
AFL officials will make a Good Friday presentation next month to the commission.
"I'm incredibly respectful of the people who are opposed to Good Friday," McLachlan said.
"There's a sense of inevitability, yes, but there's a process we have to go through because it is a significant section of the community."
