Geelong AFL player Dawson Simpson has been caught by police drink-driving, the Cats said in a statement released on Sunday night.

"The club is in the process of gathering more information before determining what actions to impose above those under law," a Geelong Football Club spokesman said.

"Relevant stakeholders have been informed of the situation including the AFL and TAC."

The incident occurred on Saturday night.

Geelong were eliminated from the premiership race on Friday night, falling to North Melbourne by six points in their semi-final.

Simpson missed the game because of injury.
