Former AFL star Brian Lake is expected home this weekend after being released from a Japanese jail without charge following a bar incident.

The three-time Hawthorn champion left the Osaka prison on Friday afternoon ending what had been a "tough week", his agent Marty Pask said.

Lake was locked up over his role in a reported bar scuffle last Sunday while celebrating an AFL Asia tournament win playing for the Indonesian Volcanoes.

Details of exactly what happened remain vague.

"Brian will share his story when he's ready, but we ask for his privacy to be respected in the meantime," said Mr Pask, who confirmed Lake would return to Australia this weekend.
