AFL coach backs debate over turf

GWS coach Leon Cameron says player safety must come first and is looking forward to the discussion about the Etihad Stadium artificial turf.

The synthetic surface at Etihad Stadium is in the spotlight for the second-straight week after two incidents involving GWS defender Lachie Whitfield.

The Giants player had two heavy collisions on the strip of artificial turf that borders the playing surface during Sunday's AFL win over Essendon.

The AFL players association has asked its members for their opinions after Geelong forward Daniel Menzel blamed his ankle injury a week ago on the artificial turf.

Giants coach Leon Cameron said after the match that the debate was worth having.

"It's a really interesting one - is it right? Because so much traffic goes around the boundary at Etihad, in terms of setting up for sporting events," Cameron said.

"It's a great venue, (but) is synthetic the right idea?

"Lachie probably hit four or five times today, not just (at) the boundary - they tackled him pretty hard."

Whitfield managed to play out the match and did not appear to be badly hurt.

"Safety comes first for the players, as we know," Cameron said.

"You don't want to see any incident happening at a ground.

"It will be an interesting discussion over the second half of the year, what they do.

"Do they put the real grass back because of the traffic that goes around there? Is that going to be the best thing?"
