The AFL Coaches' Association will review its priorities and aim to present a strategic plan to the association's board by June.
"In light of what has been a challenging year, the time is right to also review coaching accreditation, coaching pathways, professional development, coach transition and above all have a strong collective voice," AFLCA president David Parkin said in a statement on Monday.
Parkin said following the association's annual general meeting in Adelaide on March 5, members and the board adopted a recommendation to review the AFLCA's ability to meet members' needs.
AFLCA's part-time chief executive Danny Frawley was questioned closely by senior coaches during their meeting in Adelaide, according to a Fairfax report.
Senior coaches Mick Malthouse and Ross Lyon spoke frankly about how the AFLCA had let its members down in some areas, the report said.
The AFLCA has endured a difficult 2013, including dealing with Essendon coach James Hird's 12-month ban as part of Essendon supplements saga.
League chief Andrew Demetriou says he's prepared to work with the AFLCA regarding the coaches' initiative, championed by Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson, to develop a form of coaching accreditation.
AFLCA membership has grown from 106 full members in 2009 to 180 in 2014.
Parkin said the recent additions of expansion clubs Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney had contributed to the need for the association to re-assess its structure, operations, funding model, processes and objectives.
"The association is committed to representing the interests and supporting the welfare of its members," he said.
