AFL foot injuries not just Demons: Goodwin

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin believes a spate of foot injuries isn't restricted to his AFL club.

Melbourne are confident that their AFL training program isn't responsible for a run of foot injuries but will investigate further.

Coach Simon Goodwin said he had full faith in the trainers and medical staff at the Demons before their AFL clash at Geelong on Saturday night.

Co-captain Jack Viney is expected to be sidelined for a month after his problematic foot flared for the second time this year, with a toe on his right foot showing early signs of bone stress.

Billy Stretch (toe) has already been ruled out for the season while star forward Tom McDonald missed the opening five rounds with a similar complaint.

Goodwin didn't think the foot problem was strictly one specific to the Demons.

"I think if you look across the competition there's probably a few more injuries to feet in every club," Goodwin said on Wednesday .

"We'll have a look at our grounds, we'll have a look at our loads, we'll have a look at all those things that potentially go into those things.

"But our high performance and doctors have done a really strong job this year."

Three Western Bulldogs players - Tim English, Bailey Dale and Bailey Williams - have been diagnosed with stress-related foot injuries this season.

Goodwin predicted it would be a talking point for club doctors and AFL medical officers.

"I think it's something every club will be looking at. I think it's across the industry that we're seeing more feet injuries," he said.

"I'm sure it will be a discussion point at the high performance and medical officers' meetings."

Sixth-placed Melbourne are yet to defeat a team inside the top eight and they face a tough season end with four of their final six regular games against finals sides, including the eighth-ranked Cats.

Goodwin said his team wasn't bothered by the noise and felt it was simply the "reality".

The Demons are considering whether to bring in an extra midfielder against Geelong after forward Mitch Hannan replaced Viney last round.

Goodwin ruled out Aaron vandenBerg, who has played two VFL games after being out for almost 18 months with a stress fracture in his heel.

"He's missed a lot of footy so we're probably looking at three or four games before he starts to come back into the mix," Goodwin said.
