AFL free agent Ty Vickery has officially joined Hawthorn, with Richmond choosing not to match the Hawks' two-year deal for the 200cm forward-ruckman.

With Vickery leaving as a restricted free agent, the Tigers will receive a second-round compensation pick - currently pick No.26 - based on his age and the length of his new contract.

The No.8 pick in the 2008 draft, Vickery played 119 games for the Tigers, booting 158 goals.

"Ty's a terrific person, and has given our club great service in his eight seasons at Richmond," Richmond football manager Dan Richardson said on Monday.

"We accept the free agency system has provided Ty with this opportunity and we understand his desire to seek a fresh start at a new club to continue his football career."

The addition of Vickery could help the Hawks cover the losses of key forward Jarryd Roughead, who missed this season as he underwent cancer treatment, and ruckman Jonathon Ceglar, who is on the comeback trail from a knee reconstruction.

The 26-year-old Vickery was dropped twice this season, finishing his year in the VFL, but the Hawks have a strong record of getting the best out of players who started their careers elsewhere.
