AFL has answers to engaging indigenous kids

The AFL appears to have hit on a winning model for engaging Indigenous youth through a holistic facility centred on sport.

A Cairns boarding home called AFL Cape York House accommodates more than 30 Indigenous boys from Cape York and the Torres Strait, providing them with a home away from home, tutoring, work experience and AFL training.

Run by the League, it is lauded as responsible for changing the lives of the indigenous boys who attend.

“It’s the pre-eminent Indigenous youth facility in the country, in more ways than one,” says Jason Mifsud, the AFL’s head of Diversity.

“We’re looking at adopting this model in other key regions throughout Australia and particularly in remote and regional Australia.”
