AFL Magpies set to regain key duo

Nick Maxwell has retired but the possible return of Ben Reid could bolster Collingwood's backline for Sunday's AFL match against Adelaide at the MCG.

Collingwood are set to regain small forward Jamie Elliott and tall utility Ben Reid is also pushing for a recall for Sunday's AFL clash with Adelaide.

Elliott hasn't played since round 15 on June 29 when he suffered a hamstring injury in the match against Carlton.

The 178cm forward has kicked 30 goals in 14 matches in 2014.

Former All-Australian centre half-back Reid is yet to play a senior game in 2014 but has built up match fitness with two matches in the VFL after recovering from a thigh complaint.

Reid's possible return could help the Magpies cover for the loss of defender Nick Maxwell, who retired last week after his season was ended by an ankle injury.

"Reid has played the last two weeks (in the VFL) so he'll certainly be up for selection and we're reasonably confident he'll be able to play this weekend," Collingwood's football director Rodney Eade told the club's website on Monday.

Eade says he's confident Elliott, who is one game shy of his 50-game milestone, will return to the side.

"He was very close to playing the last game against Essendon," Eade said.

"He trained very well so at this stage he'll be available for selection."

A win at the MCG on Sunday is vital for Collingwood who have lost their past two games and face mounting pressure to hold their spot in the top eight.
