AFL on alert for offensive banners

Domain Stadium staff will be on high alert for anti-muslim banners during Friday night's clash between West Coast and Richmond.

AFL fans have been warned they will be caught and punished if they attempt to sneak in any anti-religious banners for Friday night's clash between West Coast and Richmond at Domain Stadium.

Two anti-Muslim banners have been unfurled at AFL games this season, with one of those being in last week's western derby in Perth.

The other one was during a Collingwood-Richmond game at the MCG.

New WAFC chief executive Gavin Taylor said security and police have been put on alert for Friday night's clash.

"It's a really hard one, because it's a banner that can get rolled up into the bottom of a bag," Taylor said.

"But we are very vigilant in terms of how we're undertaking our bag checks, and the security measures we're putting in place.

"A clear message to fans - if you're going to undertake that activity, it will be quickly pulled down, and there will be penalties applied to those people involved.

"We've got a significant amount of CCTV coverage across the whole ground.

"Our staff and security are aware of the issue, and police on sight are aware of the issue. It's something that's not appropriate and won't be tolerated."

The exact nature of the penalties are not yet known, but lifetime bans from AFL venues are on the cards.
