AFL opponents suffer jaw injuries

Fremantle small forward Hayden Ballantyne and Port Adelaide speedster Matt White hurt their jaws in the weekend's AFL finals.

Fremantle star Hayden Ballantyne has a broken jaw and AFL semi-final opponents Port Adelaide hope Matt White has avoided the same injury.

Ballantyne will need surgery after a collision with an opponent during Saturday's qualifying final loss to Sydney.

The Dockers say the contact that caused the injury to their small forward was accidental.

But the Dockers have not yet ruled the All Australian nominee out of Saturday's home semi-final against the Power.

Port Adelaide hope scans show White avoided breaking his jaw in their elimination final triumph over Richmond.

White suffered a suspected jaw fracture during Port's 57-point thumping of the Tigers in Adelaide.

White wanted to return to action but Port coach Ken Hinkley said caution prevailed.

"Right now, as I sit here, we're very hopeful. The initial thought was that he may have broken his jaw, but we're very hopeful right now that it's not a broken jaw," Hinkley said post-match.

Scan results should be known on Monday.

"If we dodge a bullet there, we would be very, very pleased," Hinkley said.

"And if we don't, we'll bring someone else in to take his spot."

Port reported no other injury concerns from their emphatic win, which set up a Saturday semi-final against Fremantle in Perth.

Port fell eight points shy of the Dockers in Perth in the last home and away round, but Hinkley expected changed scenarios in the rematch.

"The game will be a fair bit different," he said.

"There will be different personnel. There will be different conditions.

"There is so many things that can be different ... I know the contest will be pretty hot because both teams play that style of footy."

Ballantyne's injury adds to significant injury woes for Fremantle.

Michael Johnson (back) is out for the finals series and fellow defender Luke McPharlin (calf) is no certainty to return next weekend.
