The season is over for the AFL's oldest player Dustin Fletcher, who is to undergo finger surgery which will rule him out of Essendon's finals bid.
Fletcher, 39, sits in third place on the alltime games list with 393 matches, and has yet to decide whether to push on for a 23rd season in 2015.
"Dustin will head in for surgery later this week to repair a torn tendon in his finger," said Essendon's club doctor Bruce Reid.
"He dislocated his finger and tore a tendon in that finger three weeks ago at training and after further consultation it was decided that surgery was the best option.
"It is likely the surgery would keep him out of action for the rest of the season."
Fletcher will sit down with Bombers officials when the season is over to discuss his playing future.
The eighth-placed Bombers will play finals this year if they win their three remaining home and away matches, while two more victories could also be enough to get them into the post-season action.
