AFL to trial bunker on weekend

The AFL will trial a video review bunker for the first time during matches this weekend, but calls won't be transferred to the ground as this stage.

The AFL will trial an NRL-style bunker during this weekend's split round matches for calls on score reviews and concussions.

The bunker's decisions from AFL house will not be relayed to the ground and there will have no impact on decisions made by on-field umpires, however it could be introduced for "live" use in a round later this year.

"We built that (bunker) during the week and we will have a look at it this weekend," AFL head of operations Mark Evans told News Corp Australia.

As well as making score reviews after viewing a number of angles, the bunker would also allow experts to collate footage of any head knocks and send it to doctors at the ground.

It would also give them the opportunity to rewind and zoom in on replays to detect if players are displaying any symptoms of concussion which would rule them of for the remainder of a game.

"We won't trial anything live and if we can get to the stage where we are comfortable with the technology we will have a look at the score review and providing those services live," Evans said.
