AFP, PNG to share intelligence

An intelligence sharing agreement between PNG's anti-corruption taskforce and the AFP should help track millions in Australian real estate.

An intelligence sharing agreement between Papua New Guinea's anti-corruption task force and the Australian Federal Police will help the Pacific island nation battle corruption.

Task Force Sweep chairman Sam Koim told AAP the agreement, signed earlier in the week in Port Moresby, will help PNG track millions of dollars of public funds that have ended up in Cairns real estate.

"We have been on the forefront in asking Australia to step up and help us stop the corruption that is ending up in Australian real estate," Mr Koim said on Thursday.

"This will help us conduct cross border communications, it will also help us train our officers to deal with transnational crime."

AFP Assistant Commissioner for Serious and Organised Crime Ramzi Jabbour said the AFP would work closely with Sweep on issues of mutual interest, including cases where money or assets were being transferred illegally between both countries.

Under the recent expanded police partnership, 30 AFP officers and other support staff were deployed to Papua New Guinea on 4 November, while a further 20 officers will arrive before the end of December.

The deployment complements Australia's $35 million support this year for broader law and justice system improvements that are increasing access to justice in PNG.

Now into its second year, Task Force Sweep has had just one successful conviction in former planning minister Paul Tiensten, who was found guilty last week of misappropriating $4 million.

Sweep has so far made 64 arrests, while Mr Koim has previously said more than 40 per cent of the country's national budget is lost to corruption.

Mr Koim said he is satisfied with the pace.

"You cannot demand too much," he said.

"I am satisfied with what we have done."
