AFP rejects Andrews' tactical police plan

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews's suggestion of having AFP tactical response teams at airports 24 hours a day has been knocked back.

The Australian Federal Police say Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews' idea to have tactical response teams at every airport is too expensive and makes no sense.

At the moment if an airport incident requires a tactical response unit it is provided by state police.

AFP acting commissioner Michael Phelan says putting federal teams at airports 24/7 is financially unreasonable and it's "common sense" to use state resources.

"It just makes sense. You can't have a high-end capability stationed in singular locations waiting for something to occur," Mr Phelan said in Melbourne on Monday.

A spokeswoman for Mr Andrews said the idea had been among a number of proposals put forward at a recent COAG meeting.

"Given our airports are Commonwealth controlled assets, it's important that the Australian Federal Police have a dedicated 24/7 tactical capability to quickly respond to any potential security threats," she said.

After a security scare on a Malaysia Airlines flight at Melbourne Airport and a terror attack in Brighton soon after, Mr Andrews had said he wanted to see AFP tactical response teams at airports around the clock.
