Air crash investigators at NSW site

Investigators from the air safety bureau have arrived at a crash site near Mudgee where a light plane went down in a paddock, killing two.

Air safety investigators will spend the next few days examining the site in central western NSW where a Victorian couple died in a light-plane crash.

The aircraft left Dubbo on Sunday morning and crashed just short of Mudgee airport, killing Terry and Bev Fisher, who were both in their 60s.

Mr Fisher was a pilot with 40 years experience.

The couple from Pakenham, near West Gippsland, died at the scene.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) says two investigators arrived at noon on Monday to start gathering information and talking to witnesses.

"Over the next few days they will examine the wreckage and accident site. They will collect maintenance and pilot records and interview witnesses," an ATSB spokeswoman told AAP.

Daughter-in-law Tracey Fisher says the family is shattered.

"Devastated and heartbroken for my husband today as his parents died in a plane crash," she posted on Facebook on Sunday.

A witness said that when the two-seater plane went into land at Mudgee airport, the engine was spluttering and it crashed on its side only metres from the runway.

"It just dropped, just like a rock, straight down," witness Grant Willetts told the Seven Network.

The pilots of three other planes travelling with the Fishers landed safely.

The ATSB is seeking witness reports and urges the public to call its hotline on 1800 020 616.
