Air traffic system to hit Defence budget

The auditor-general has revealed Defence will be hitting up the government for more money for a new air traffic control system.

The Turnbull government will be asked to fork out more money for a new air traffic control system being rolled out by Defence.

The Civil Military Air Traffic Management System - described by Defence as "the most advanced and integrated air traffic control system in the world" - is singled out in a new auditor-general report which examines $62 billion in annual Defence spending.

It was due to cost $730.7 million, but the audit report said approval had been sought for a "real cost increase", which was expected to be considered by the government in February.

The system has been added to the list of "projects of concern", which also includes the MRH90 helicopters project and the Air Warfare Destroyer.
