An AirAsia flight from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur has diverted to Melbourne because of a minor technical fault.

An Airservices Australia spokesman denied reports that the plane had been circling Melbourne Airport for two hours, but confirmed it had attempted to land more than once on Tuesday.

"We are not sure of, at this stage, the reason for the missed approach," the spokesman told AAP on Tuesday.

"But it is a common occurrence and not related to the technical fault."

He said the pilot had chosen to divert the plane to Melbourne because of bad weather in Sydney.

Information, including whether the plane is still in Melbourne, is being sought from AirAsia.

While she couldn't confirm the plane was an AirAsia flight, a Melbourne Airport spokeswoman said an incoming pilot had highlighted that there could be difficulty landing safely on Tuesday afternoon.

The pilot had requested a precautionary "local standby", she said.

The plane landed without incident or injury.
