Airlines squeezing regional airports: AAA

Airlines are seeking a cutback in fees and charges at Australia's regional airports in an unsustainable move, the Airports Association says.

Airlines are putting the screws on Australia's regional airport operators by seeking a reduction in landing charges, a representative body says.

The Australian Airports Association said small airports, often operated by local councils, are already struggling as they work to provide essential infrastructure requirements and meet security upgrades.

"About one-third of our regional airports owned by local government bodies are making a loss," association boss Caroline Wilkie said.

On top of that, airlines are seeking reductions in landing charges and other concessions and rebates, she said.

"This is not sustainable for regional airport operators and the communities they serve."

The association has called for airlines to work with airport operators to ensure the survival and growth of regional facilities.
