First there were cane toads, and now there are newts.

Scientists are alarmed over the recent discovery of smooth newts in Melbourne's urban fringe that have come in across Australian bio-security borders.

They're an aquatic amphibian that occurs almost exclusively in the northern hemisphere.

Once available only behind pet shop windows, the smooth newt has scientists at the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions concerned.

The Centre's Dr Reid Tingley told Dragana Mrkaja the smooth newts could be used for illegal trade.
