Albacete player Novo in hospital after hotel accident - club

HUESCA (Reuters) - Spanish second division team Albacete's midfielder Pelayo Novo has been taken to hospital after suffering a serious accident at his hotel ahead of their game away to league leaders Huesca, which has been postponed, the club said on Saturday.

"Our player, Pelayo Novo, suffered a serious accident this morning in the hotel where the team are staying," said a statement from Albacete.

"Our player, who is in a stable condition, has been taken to hospital in Zaragoza. The club's medical staff have been at his side the whole time. We will continue to release updates about the state of our player."

Spanish newspaper Marca reported that Novo fell from the third story of the Abba Hotel in Huesca and was discovered by team mates Ruben Mino and Nestor Susaeta.

The Spanish midfielder, 27, was taken by ambulance to hospital in Zaragoza, 73 km from the city of Huesca.

He joined Albacete last year from Romanian club Cluj, having previously played for Real Oviedo, Elche, Cordoba and Lugo.

The league's organising body said in a statement on its official Twitter account that the game had been postponed.

"Albacete would like to thank SD Huesca for their understanding and their predisposition to help out, as well as La Liga, the Spanish Football Federation and other clubs, institutions and other sporting organisations that have been concerned about the state of our player," Albacete added.
