Lives and homes are no longer at risk from a bushfire north of Perth, which is suspected of being deliberately lit.

While smoke from the out-of-control blaze continues to blanket the city, authorities have downgraded a watch and act for residents in the Shire of Mundaring and City of Kalamunda.

It's been replaced with an advice alert for people in and around Mundaring Weir Village, near Mundaring Weir Road between Firewood Road and Lockwood Road, and south of the Great Eastern Highway near Gorrie Road, Chambers Road and Firewood Road.

"Although there is no immediate danger you need to be aware and keep up to date in case the situation changes," the EmergencyWA alert said.

Firefighters are expected to work through Sunday night assisted by aerial water bombers as they try and build containment lines.

The blaze is travelling west after burning through about 3000 hectares.

It's suspected of being deliberately lit on Sunday morning, about 12km south of the Mundaring township.

A low pressure system following ex-Tropical Cyclone Joyce is trapping smoke over Perth, with reports of ash falling in suburbs as far apart Leeming and Hamilton Hill.

The smoke plume is so big it can be seen from Rottnest Island more than 65km away.

Some roads around the fire and part of the popular Bibbulmun Track have been closed, with motorists asked to avoid the area.
