Algeria awards $US4b power plant contracts

Contracts worth $US4 billion have been awarded to South Korean and Spanish companies to build six power plants in Algeria.

Algeria's electricity and gas company Sonelgaz has awarded $US4 billion ($A4.44 billion) in contracts to South Korean and Spanish companies to build six power plants, the APS news agency said.

Chosen for the projects were a partnership of Hyundai Engineering and Daewoo International, as well as the other South Korean firms of Samsung and GS/Daelim. Spain's Duro Felguera rounded out the list.

The contracts announced Wednesday are for facilities that will generate between 1200 and 1600 megawatts.

The mostly desert North African country is seeking to increase its production capacity to put an end to frequent power cuts, particularly during the summer.

In September, Sonelgaz awarded a $US2.2 billion contract to General Electric of the US for turbines with a total capacity of 8400 kilowatts.
