Ali's ton, England dominate 1st India Test

Moeen Ali has scored his fourth Test hundred as England seek to press home their advantage on day two of their opening five-day match against India in Rajkot.

Moeen Ali has completed his fourth Test hundred as England bid to press home their advantage on Thursday's second day of their opening five-day encounter against India in Rajkot.

Moeen needed just a single to add his century to Joe Root's the previous day, and scampered it from the third ball of the morning off Mohammad Shami after India took the second new ball on the resumption in the first Test of five.

In Ben Stokes, Moeen had the ideal partner to put India under further pressure - and, after an hour's play, despite their second centurion's departure, England moved from 4-311 to 5-371.

Moeen hit nine fours in his four-hour milestone and, in the next over from Umesh Yadav, he added three more in four balls - twice helped by unimpressive work in the field.

He was to pay for a misjudgment against Shami, though, getting his angles wrong and leaving one from round the wicket which knocked out off stump when on 117.

After a fifth-wicket stand of 52, Stokes passed his own half-century, and new partner Jonny Bairstow soon announced his intent by hitting legspinner Amit Mishra straight for six.
