All Blacks selection door open for Ireland

The All Blacks selectors are weighing up form versus freshness ahead of their season-ending Test against Ireland.

All Blacks players involved in a promotional trip to Germany this week or selected for the season-ending Barbarians game are all in contention to face Ireland.

Assistant coach Ian Foster was delighted that 35 of the 36-strong tour squad are still in contention for their last Test of the year in Dublin on Sunday.

Only injured first five-eighth Dan Carter (Achilles) is definitely out while prop Tony Woodcock (hamstring) is under a cloud but still being assessed.

Carter was one of four players involved in a two-day promotional visit to Nuremberg. Fullback Israel Dagg, flanker Liam Messam and lock Brodie Retallick also made the trip and were to rejoin the team late on Tuesday.

Eight others were named on Tuesday in a Barbarians squad to play Fiji at Twickenham on November 30.

They are backs Charles Piutau, Frank Halai, Tom Taylor and TJ Perenara, and forwards Luke Whitelock, Steven Luatua, Dominic Bird and Keven Mealamu. Halfback Perenara is the traditional uncapped selection in the festival team.

Foster says all are under the selection microscope this week, admitting that energy levels will be a key consideration after virtually the same team ran out for the wins this month over France and England.

"Those who are fit and available, are available," Foster said.

"It's always on your mind as a selector. You're trying to figure out where the team's at and looking at the fatigue side versus freshness.

"The unit is extremely fresh at the moment, for being in the middle of November."

With an eight-day gap between the England and Ireland Tests, the All Blacks have the luxury of an extra day at the start of the week to detect any weariness.

It isn't an exact science but the coaches and medical staff have become adept at identifying players in need of a break.

"We want to put out our strongest team every week," Foster said.

"Sometimes we don't make any changes. Sometimes we make two to three based on where we feel the right thing to do is bring a bit more energy into the selection."
