For those who have fled their homes and the threat of a savage bushfire in South Australia, there's not much to do but wait and hope for the best.

Hundreds of people flocked to the Golden Grove Recreation Centre in the Adelaide foothills on Saturday, where food, water and air-conditioning offered relief from the extreme weather outside.

By early evening, that number had dropped to about 20, with most evacuees finding places to stay with family and friends or taking up offers of free motel accommodation.

Tea Tree Gully mayor Kevin Knight says activity at the relief centre has eased after a busy day.

"Everything seems to be fairly calm and fairly quiet at the moment," he told AAP.

"Most people seem to have gone home. There's a few people still here.

While thick smoke caused concern overnight, conditions at Golden Grove have since cleared.

But Mr Knight said he was conscious that conditions could change rapidly.

"I am worried about a bit of complacency," he said.

"It would only take a couple of stiff gully winds and we could be in some trouble."

The relief centre has asked the public to hold off on food and water donations after it was inundated with generous offerings.
