A woman is due to front court after she allegedly grabbed a toddler who wandered away from the family home in southern Sydney.

Police say they became suspicious when they spotted a woman walking down a Sutherland street on Thursday afternoon with a barefoot child.

As they were questioning the woman, the boy's father ran up, saying his three-year-old son had disappeared from his flat just a few minutes earlier.

Police say the child was upset, but not hurt.

The woman, 34, was refused bail and is due to appear in Sutherland Local Court on Friday on a charge of taking or detaining a child with intent to remove from parental control.
