The family of a man who died after he was bashed outside a Melbourne McDonald's say they still can't make sense of what happened.

The uncle and aunt of 21-year-old Joshua Hardy flew from Darwin to Melbourne for Friday's court appearance of the man charged with murdering their nephew.

Kyle Zandipour appeared briefly, with his lawyer, George Defteros, indicating that a Supreme Court bail application was being considered.

Zandipour, 28, is accused of bashing Mr Hardy outside a St Kilda Road McDonald's early last Saturday morning.

Mr Hardy died in hospital an hour later.

Chief magistrate Peter Lauritsen remanded Zandipour in custody to reappear on March 23.

Outside court, Joshua's uncle, Shaun Hardy, said he and his sister and 10 of Joshua's university friends would accompany his body on a flight to Darwin on Saturday to be buried.

"What can we, as a society or as individuals, do about this?" he said to reporters.

"We can't make sense of it at the moment but if we ask for anything it would be we say 'no more' to violence."

Joshua's aunt, Kim Hardy, said it was important to be in Melbourne for the hearing.

"Because he's our nephew, our family," she said.

Ms Hardy said Joshua's parents were not coping.

"They are heartbroken, they are devastated, they are broken, as is most of the Darwin community," she said.
