An American who allegedly lied about his credentials to gain a $400,000-a-year executive job at Myer faces nine fraud-related charges.
Andrew Jeffery Flanagan, 46, of Mount Waverley, is charged with dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by securing the position as a manager of strategy and business development at the retailer in June.
Flanagan allegedly lied in his resume, verbal employment history and references that he had held a number of senior executive positions, charge sheets allege.
He is also charged with using fake credentials to gain a $350,000-a-year job as chief operating officer with Specialty Fashion Group, the owner of the Rivers and Millers chains, as well as the role of chief executive of the Australian Arab Chamber of Commerce and Industry, an executive job at Bendigo Health and a position as a casual lecturer at the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE.
Flanagan is charged with offences that occurred between 2011 and this year, including four of obtaining property by deception, obtaining financial advantage by deception, theft and making and using a false document.
His defence lawyer Rowan Slattery told a committal mention hearing on Monday he disputed some of the witness evidence and added there were issues around whether a falsity in a resume constituted the alleged deception.
But Magistrate Charles Rozencwajg said: "If he handed up references and they were false, that's really what the charge is all about."
Mr Rozencwajg said the issue went "south" after Myer announced Flanagan's appointment in the media and the alleged deception became known and Flanagan was not performing as well as someone with his credentials was expected to.
Flanagan's bail was extended until December 15 for a one-day committal hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court.
