Alleged people smuggler arrested in Sydney

A man is due to face court in Sydney on people smuggling charges after he was allegedly involved in five illegal boat arrivals.

A Sydney man has been arrested after allegedly helping organise five people smuggling trips to Australia over three years.

The Australian Federal Police arrested the 34-year-old on Thursday following a lengthy investigation into boat arrivals between 2010 and 2013.

It will be alleged the man was involved in organising five boat trips to Australia - via Malaysia and Indonesia - with passengers from Iraq.

He has been charged with a string of offences, including seven counts of people smuggling.

He will appear in Sydney's Central Local Court on Friday.
