Police say a 27-year-old woman got out of the lift at her unit block in Auburn on Wednesday evening to see a man performing a lewd act.

When the man grabbed her by the shoulder the woman screamed and hit him with her bag, causing him to flee.

The woman told police she had seen the man in the lift before and at her workplace.

Following a public appeal for information, a 21-year-old man attended Auburn Police Station on Saturday and was charged with assault with act of indecency, commit act of indecency and stalk/intimidate intending fear or physical harm.

He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.
