A man who allegedly abseiled off Brisbane's Story Bridge has been ordered to front court.

Queensland Police say the 42-year-old from Mount Gravatt East was lowered into a water police boat on Saturday afternoon, brought to shore, and taken off to the city's watch house.

He was later charged with unregulated high-risk activities and is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on August 4.

Two lanes of traffic had to be closed for about an hour as police worked to pluck the man and his rope from the structure.
