Alleged Vic killer disputes pulling knife

More than 40 people saw an incident in which a man allegedly stabbed his partner to death, a Melbourne court has heard.

A man accused of the stabbing murder of his partner in a Melbourne street will dispute evidence about who produced the knife, a court has been told.

Craig McDermott, 38, has been charged with killing Fiona Warzywoda, 33, in front of lunchtime shoppers at Sunshine on April 16, after the two had been in court over a family violence order.

The Melbourne Magistrates Court was told there were 118 witnesses in the case, including more than 40 people who saw the altercation.

McDermott's lawyer Anne-Marie Stephanides said she wanted to cross-examine the witnesses about when the knife was produced and who produced it.

"My client is not conceding that he purchased the knife right prior to the incident," Ms Stephanides told the court on Thursday.

She said among the witnesses to be called at the committal hearing were people who had attended the family violence proceeding.

McDermott, of Sunshine North, was remanded in custody for a committal mention on September 4.
