Allies back citizenship changes: Tehan

Stripping terrorists of their Australian citizenship is an important tool in fighting Islamic State, parliament has heard.

Revoking citizenship is seen by Australia's allies as a vital tool in tackling terrorism, the chairman of parliament's intelligence committee says.

Liberal MP Dan Tehan has reported to parliament on a three-member delegation to the UK, France and US which met with intelligence officials and lawmakers to discuss ways to deal with Islamic State.

"Citizen revocation is a much needed and effective mechanism to address the effect of returning fighters," Mr Tehan said.
