Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso says he is lucky to be alive after the horrifying crash that destroyed his McLaren-Honda and momentarily stopped the Australian Formula One Grand Prix.

The 34-year-old clipped the rear left tyre of Haas F1 Team's Esteban Gutierrez as he attempted a high speed pass during Sunday's race with his wrecked McLaren finally coming to a stop upside down in a gravel trap.

Alonso was able to free himself from the wreckage and both drivers walked away unscathed from the crash.
