Amazing Spider-Man 2 takes No.1 spot

On a weekend where the top seven films all took more than $1 million, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has swung into first place on the Australian box office.

Many Australians headed to the cinema over the long weekend, where the movie of choice was The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro.

The sequel to the 2012 reboot, starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx, swung into No.1 with $5.347 million on its opening weekend, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

New comedy The Other Woman, starring Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann, also took its fair share of the box office, coming in second place with $4.034 million. Together, they bumped The Lego Movie and Captain America: The Winter Soldier down two places each to third and fourth respectively.

The top seven films on the Aussie box office all took above the one million dollar mark. They included Wes Anderson's latest film, The Grand Budapest Hotel, which fell one place to fifth, the adaptation Divergent, which dropped three spots to No.6 and animated flick Mr Peabody & Sherman, which fell two places to seventh.

Muppets Most Wanted, down one spot from last weekend, took eighth position, while Russell Crowe's biblical epic Noah fell to ninth.

New entry 2 States rounded out the ladder in 10th place.
