Matt Jones has carded a four-under par 68 to be the only Australian to make the cut at the PGA Tour's season-opener.

After a sluggish first-round, Jones had six birdies and two bogeys on Friday to be tied for 34th at four-under.

Aaron Baddeley (71) and Greg Chalmers (72) missed out on weekend play by a shot while Steve Allan's 76 left him four-over.

Tyler Duncan chipped in from the fringe for eagle on the par-five 18th hole to take the second-round lead.

But his six-under round of 66, which has him 13-under, was overshadowed by a course record 11-under par 61 by compatriot Chesson Hadley.

He parred the final two holes but it was still a career-best round by three shots.

"It's just one of those days everything was going my way," Hadley, who regained his tour card through the secondary Web.com Tour, said.

"I was hitting great shots, good putts and got some good breaks. When you get that of momentum, things just go your way."

He had an eagle, 10 birdies and a bogey.

Making his second career PGA Tour start, Duncan leads by a stroke from defending champion Brendan Steele..

"It's crazy, it's nothing I could have ever dreamed of," Duncan said.

"I'm just happy to be playing here and to be in the lead is something special."

Steele had six birdies and a bogey in a 67.

"It was really a solid day, very similar to yesterday," Steele said.

"I hit a lot of good shots, rolled and a lot of good putts and was able to watch Chesson go crazy."

Zac Blair (66) and Tony Finau (65) were nine-under, with Canadian Graham DeLaet (67) and England's Brian Davis (66) another shot back.

Phil Mickelson, seeking his first win in since 2013, shot his second 69 to be at six-under in a tie for 15th.

"I expected to score a little bit better today, but I had some good chances today," Mickelson, who had six birdies, one bogey and a double bogey, said.

John Daly, who is playing via a sponsor exemption, birdied the 18th for second-round 69 to make the one-under cut on the number.
