America's Best Food Cities: About the series

In a new series, Washington Post food critic Tom Sietsema explores the best food cities in the United States and what makes them great.

He will spend several days in each one eating, drinking and shopping to determine what makes a top-notch American food city — an assessment defined by many factors: creativity, variety, tradition, access to prime ingredients and more. The odyssey will take place over the next nine months — after which he will rank the cities.

The first installment focuses on one of the nation's most beloved restaurant destinations: Charleston, South Carolina, where high-quality ingredients, a dedication to culinary history and preservation, and forward-thinking chefs combine to create a uniquely delicious food scene.

Photos, videos and an interactive map accompany the article.

Upcoming cities in the series include San Francisco and Chicago.
