Anderson advances at Darts World Champs

Australia's Kyle Anderson has progressed to the third round of the World Darts Championships in London by eliminating Noel Malicdem of the Philippines.

Australia's Kyle Anderson is through to the third round of the World Darts Championships after eliminating tournament debutant Noel Malicdem at London's Alexandra Palace.

The world No.27 was initially pushed all the way by the Filipino qualifier, who is not ranked inside the world's top 250.

The first two sets were shared before Malicdem missed four darts which would have seen him take a 2-1 lead, and Anderson made the most of the let-off.

In an entertaining match where there were 13 maximums, Anderson took advantage to win the next three legs and eventually stroll to a 3-1 victory.

Anderson had been expected to face world No.6-ranked Welshman Gerwyn Price but the reigning Grand Slam champion was upset by England's Nathan Aspinall.

Price crashed out after surrendering a two-set lead - he had a dart to win the match in the third set but missed the bull as the momentum shifted in Aspinall's favour.

Aspinall produced one of the finest performances of his career to win six of the final seven legs.

The fourth quarter of the draw is now wide open following the early departures of Peter Wright, Price, and Ian White.

"It's unreal. At 2-0 down, I still believed in myself. Now, hopefully, I can go deep in the competition," Aspinall said.

Price's surprise exit came after 11th seed White was knocked out in similar circumstances in a dramatic encounter with South African Devon Petersen, who edged the clash 3-2.

Australia's top-ranked player Simon Whitlock, the tournament's eighth seed, was a surprise second round casualty. He was beaten 3-0 by England's Ryan Joyce.
