Andrew Johns has questioned whether Jarryd Hayne is unfit and overweight following his uninspiring and tumultuous NRL season.

Hayne again had a game to forget in Gold Coast's 26-14 loss to Canterbury on Saturday.

Coach Neil Henry was sacked after falling out with Hayne just five days earlier, a shake up which was expected to fire up the Titans playing squad.

But Hayne, like the rest of the side, was once again ordinary and committed simple errors such as kicking out on the full.

It led rugby league great Johns to question whether Hayne, who has been criticised for not performing to the level expected of his $1.2 million pay packet, was fit enough.

"The key there is training," Johns told the Nine Network.

"We all think about Jarryd in 2009 when he just went berserk. It was the best couple of months of footy we've seen from anyone.

"He just doesn't have that speed, agility, he can't break a tackle like he did. I don't think he looks fit. I look at some of their (the Titans players) body shapes and I think a lot of their players are carrying weight."

Johns stressed that Hayne had the potential to be the game's best player if he got his body right.

Henry was sacked after Hayne revealed the coach hadn't spoken to him in the week leading up to the loss to St George Illawarra and said he'd leave the club if Henry wanted him gone.

Hayne later accused Henry of leaking damaging stories about his work ethic and training habits to the media.

"Everyone made their point about Jarryd earlier in the week but it just kept going on and on and on," Johns said.

"I felt sorry for Jarryd. I thought Jarryd would go out and make a huge statement, he was really poor. At stages he looked disinterested."
