Another Families SA worker has been charged with sex offences, the state's child protection department says.

The Department for Education and Child Development (DECD) issued a statement on Tuesday revealing police had charged a current employee with five counts of unlawful sexual intercourse.

The charges relate to incidents which are alleged to have occurred in 2012 involving one victim.

A DECD spokesman said the man is currently employed as a school services officer at a regional primary school and as a casual youth worker for Families SA.

The man has been directed away from work, the spokesman said.

He had previously worked at two regional high schools.

"The department is currently examining the employee's work roster at Families SA and will notify the relevant carers and parents as soon as possible," the spokesman said.

"As the matter is currently before the courts, we are unable to provide further detail at this time."

Police said a 31-year-old man, from the state's southeast, had been refused bail and was expected to appear in the Mt Gambier Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, a Families SA carer accused of sexually abusing seven preschool children made a brief appearance in the Adelaide magistrates court.

That case led to Premier Jay Weatherill announcing a royal commission into the state's child protection system, to be led by former Supreme Court justice Margaret Nyland.
