Tasmanian premier Will Hodgman could be joined in parliament by his uncle after a strong performance in elections for the state's upper house.
Peter Hodgman was contesting the Legislative Council seat of Huon in a poll held on Saturday.
With around 80 per cent of votes counted, the Liberal candidate led with 26 per cent in a field of seven candidates.
He formerly held the seat between 1974-86.
Peter Hodgman is the brother of the late Michael Hodgman, a minister in the Fraser government and state politician.
Michael's son Will Hodgman was elected premier in a landslide in March.
The family dynasty stretches back to the premier's grandfather, who was a member of both houses.
Will Hodgman has said his uncle would play a prominent role in the new government if he was elected.
That will be decided when preferences are distributed in coming days.
Huon, in the state's south, has no incumbent after previous independent member Paul Harriss successfully ran for the Liberals in the lower house in March.
The seat was one of two being contested on Saturday in Tasmania's staggered upper house elections.
In the northern electorate of Rosevears, incumbent independent Kerry Finch had 60 per cent of the vote with 80 per cent counted, well ahead of his only rival, Liberal Don Morris (40).
Tasmania's 15-member upper house is dominated by independents, with just two Liberal and one Labor MLC.
Peter Hodgman's election would take the Liberals' tally to three.
Two or three seats in Legislative Council are contested each year instead of in a general election.
