Another lay day at California surf event

Competition at the world surf event at Lower Trestles in California has been called off for a third straight day with only small and fading surf on offer.

World Surf League officials say better waves are on their way after they called another lay day in California.

Competition was called off for a third straight day at Lower Trestles on Tuesday with only small and fading surf on offer.

"There are still some small waves around but we know there's something better on the way so we won't be running any heats today," said WSL deputy commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer.

When the event - which needs to be completed by the end of Sunday - resumes, up first will be either Australian Joel Parkinson against Brazilian Filipe Toledo in the men's quarter-finals or South Africa's Bianca Buitendag battling American Lakey Peterson in the women's semi-finals.

Aussie Mick Fanning is scheduled to face countryman Adrian Buchan as he continues his pursuit of a fourth world crown.

WOMEN'S SEMI-FINALS:

Bianca Buitendag (South Africa) vs Lakey Peterson (US)

Carissa Moore (Hawaii) vs Dimity Stoyle (Australia)

MEN'S QUARTER-FINALS:

Filipe Toledo (Brazil) vs. Joel Parkinson (Australia)

Adriano de Souza (Brazil) vs. Wiggolly Dantas (Brazil)

Adrian Buchan (Australia) vs. Mick Fanning (Australia)

Gabriel Medina (Brazil) vs. Nat Young (US)
