Another lay day at Snapper Rocks

Small waves at Snapper Rocks have forced another lay day to be called at the season-opening World Surf League event on the Gold Coast.

"Unfortunately there won't be any competition today," said WSL commissioner Kieren Perrow in a statement on Monday.

"It's too small and that swell really died out overnight."

Perrow added that organisers expected the swell to pick up over the next few days.

On Sunday, the window for the event to be completed was extended until Friday given the lack of quality surf.

When competition resumes, Australia's three-time world champion Mick Fanning will face American wildcard Dane Reynolds in the opening heat of round two, while 11-time world champion Kelly Slater faces trials winner Jack Freestone in heat two.

In the women's event, Australia's six-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore will take on Brazil's Silvana Lima for the third time in the competition in the quarter-finals.
