The 2013/14 Antarctic season is underway and this season Australian researchers will look to the past to find answers to future environmental concerns.

Research will focus on the ancient Adelie penguin sites, which scientists hope will reveal any changes in the birds' diets over time.

Investigations will also continue into the effects of carbon dioxide on marine microbes.

Australian Antarctic Division seabird ecologist Dr Barbara Wienecke will be leading the research on penguins and flying birds.

She told Rachelle Alchin she hopes the findings from her research will help to prepare for protecting the birds from upcoming environmental changes.
